Jora Atienza Washington

Director of the North Beach-Chinatown Beacon Center
Jora has been overseeing youth and community programs in the San Francisco Bay Area for the last 10 years. Most recently she directed K-12 academic, enrichment, and leadership programs for young people, as well as adult volunteer programs with Oakland Asian Students Educational Services, located in the Chinatown area of Oakland. She has also established and managed comprehensive school-based after school and summer programs at public schools in the Mission District of San Francisco and has worked extensively with school day teachers to improve their practice through coaching and implementing cycles of inquiry. Jora is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, and is multilingual in English, Tagalog, and Italian. She lives in Oakland with her family.




Theresa Alvarez

Associate Director of Programs
Born and raised in Southern California, Theresa Alvarez came to the Bay Area over 8 years ago to pursue her education. With a strong passion for social justice and community work, Theresa graduated from San Francisco State University with a degree in Child and Adolescent Development with a concentration in Research and Public Policy. She is no stranger to youth development work and has been working with Beacon's in San Francisco for the past five years. For years Theresa was a Family Neighborhood Organizer for Mission Beacon and continues to be a member of the city-wide Beacon Bridge team which works to organize San Francisco youth and the strengthen the Youth Development movement. In addition to serving the community, Theresa is a big fan of music, photography, culture, food and is known to find any reason to bring all her favorite things together...always celebrating our families and our communities is her motto.
